East Campus reopens newly refurbished Parents' Association lounge

By Tara Diong, Communications and Content Officer, East Campus

The Parents' Association (PA) East's mission is 'Building Community Together' and that perfectly describes the sentiments felt during the opening ceremony of the newly refurbished PA lounge, as the East community came together both in person and online to celebrate this wonderful new addition to our campus.

On Friday, 26 February 2021, the PA hosted the opening ceremony, attended by guest of honour and Chair of the Board, Madan Menon. The event was also attended by College President, Carma Elliot, and Chair of PA East, Cynthia Ding. A small number of guests, including both staff and parents, were able to be there in person and the remaining guests joined via a livestream.

Madan addressed parents and hosted a Q and A session, answering questions about a range of topics including the College's ongoing sustainability initiatives and strategic plans, as well as the upcoming 50th-anniversary celebrations. When talking about sustainability at UWCSEA, Madan mentioned the rooftop solar panels, an initiative started by the student-led Solar for East team, as well as how rainwater is collected and harvested for recycling on campus.

“I think the school is doing an incredible job reflecting and embedding the sustainability ethos and responsibility into the students’ thinking” – Madan Menon

The dedicated PA renovation team managed the refurbishment of the space with new furniture, a small conference room, open plan working space, and a lovely new kitchen area – a feat made even more challenging with Covid-imposed restrictions on coming onto campus. Carma Elliot showed her warm appreciation for all of the parent volunteers, “I would like to thank everybody who committed their time. Any community is very dependant on volunteers and the commitment of volunteers to enhance the community and add value to the community through things like this parents’ lounge”.

Echoing Carma’s sentiments, Cynthia added “The PA only thrives on the support of our parents and the devotion and commitment of our volunteers. We are enormously proud that we have almost 200 parent volunteers registered with us”.

Note: Over the course of the next months, through organised and planned scheduled events, we hope to start to bring parents back onto campus in slow and small numbers and in accordance with regulations. We look forward to when all parents can make use of this fantastic new space.
