Welcoming Olympian Gymnasts for SUNLIVE International WAG Training Camp
This holiday break was an exciting one for many gymnastics enthusiasts in the UWCSEA community. For a week from 23 June, East Campus hosted the SUNLIVE International WAG Training Camp on campus, a first-of-its-kind event in Asia.
We were graced by 32 gymnasts and 17 coaches from Singapore, Canada, France, Australia, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, Philippines, Japan, Peru, UK, China and Portugal - over a dozen countries across four continents. Top international experts led the camp: Canadian FIG Expert and 4-time Olympian Coach, Carol-Angela Orchard; Australian Commonwealth Games Medalist, Tim Lees; and French 5-time Olympian Coach Eric Boucharin.
As part of our Coaching Team, Ng Shu Wai, Malaysian National Team Coach lent her expert support to gymnasts and coaches during the training sessions.
One valuable way to hone a craft is to learn from the best: our gymnasts were privileged to experience an intimate “Meet the Olympians” session where they heard from Olympic guests, Lim Heem Wei from Singapore and Angel Wong from Hong Kong, both London 2012 Olympic Games Gymnasts.
The camp allowed for high-level and wide-range training taught through different approaches, in terms of technicality, artistry, trampoline drills, warm-ups, flexibility and physical preparation. It was a tremendous opportunity for our gymnasts to learn from experts in the sport, and inspire them in their gymnastic experience.
