UWCSEA String Orchestra Programme, Dover Campus

Many excellent musicians have graduated from UWCSEA with some becoming professional players, our String Orchestra Programme is continuing this tradition. The programme is inclusive, all students who play an orchestral string instrument from the beginning skill level to the most advanced can participate. Our students are united and challenged by the aim to achieve excellence in performance while honing their individual and ensemble skills.  Participation in our programme is fun and the joy of making music together is shared through the many concerts given throughout the year.

Our young musicians are inspired and motivated through commendable ensemble training, well chosen repertoire and amazing performance opportunities.  Strategies and techniques are used to support the students in their endeavor to obtain individual and ensemble performance excellence. The repertoire is selected from a variety of different genres ranging from classical music to pop songs, and from educational arrangements through to professional works. Recently our advanced students admirably performed the Tschaikowsky Serenade for Strings in C major, movement 1 and Symphony No 7 in A major by Beethoven, movements 1 & 2. Our concerts are regularly given in professional theatres including The Esplanade and the Yong Siew Toh Concert Hall, in 2018 our students played in the magnificent Golden Hall of the Musikverein in Vienna.

The benefits gained by participating in the String Orchestral Programme are immense as the students develop the qualities and skills that are essential to our UWCSEA learner profile and education. While rehearsing together the students are using their critical thinking skills and creativity, working collaboratively, communicating, and improving their self management. Through performing with other students they continue to develop their qualities of commitment to care, resilience, being principled and self aware.

The String Orchestra Programme consists of 230 students playing in 6 string orchestras, a full symphony orchestra, solo recitals, regular performances in professional concert halls, international tours and the opportunity for the mature students to mentor younger players.

The String Orchestra Programme has let me work on many important skills such as teamwork, cooperation and leadership, whilst also allowing me to have a form of creative fun. It's allowed me to learn more about the "music world" and similar passions. It has shaped me to be who I am today, and I'll be forever thankful. -Maia 12AHS

The String Orchestra Programme has helped me and many others make friendships that would otherwise not have formed. The friendships created in orchestra extend beyond the weekly rehearsals. Being a part of the String Support Service feels very rewarding, as I feel I am making a difference to the younger musicians. -Gwyneth 8MTR

Playing in Chamber Players introduced to me a different way of loving music, one that I look forward to carrying on via the college music programme in the years to come. -Jodi 10GKW

Playing the violin with my peers has been a constant highlight to my week since joining UWCSEA, this strong sense of community through playing music will be an experience that will stick with me through life. -Sid 10WPO
