UWCSEA alumnus Tim Jarvis ’84 participates in expert panel on climate change

UWCSEA alumnus Tim Jarvis, polar explorer, author, public speaker and environmental scientist, participated as part of a panel of experts in Adelaide on 6 February, discussing heatwaves due to climate change in Australia.

The panel was held on behalf of The Resilient East Project, an initiative between a number of government and other agencies in South Australia whose long-term goal is to improve the resilience of communities, assets and infrastructure, local economies and the natural environment to help them prepare to cope with the inevitable impacts of a changing climate. Members of the expert panel discussed with the audience the future impact of continuing down the current path, and made suggestions for possible ways to reduce and manage the risks of climate change and to take action to live more sustainably.

Tim holds Master's degrees in environmental science and environmental law. He was made a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) for services to environment, community and exploration in the 2010 Australian honours list and was voted Conservationist of the Year in 2016 by the Australian Geographic Society. Tim supports and is involved in a number of initiatives and environmental advocacy work aimed at achieving sustainable outcomes and he uses his expeditions to raise awareness about climate change.
