Charlotte Thomas ‘11: Professional Golfer on Symetra Tour
By Brenda Whately, Alumni Relations Director
Charlotte Thomas is a professional golfer, currently playing the Symetra Tour, previously known as the LPGA Futures Tour - the official development golf tour leading to the LPGA. Charlotte’s goal is to play on the LPGA Tour within the next three or four years.
Coming from a family of golfers, Charlotte played for UWCSEA while a student, competing in SEASAC Golf and other tournaments. Back for a visit to UWCSEA in November, she met with University Advisor John Bush, who headed the student golf team that Charlotte was a member of. John says, “It was great to see Charlotte as enthusiastic about her golf as ever. Charlotte and her three brothers, Billy, Pete and Robbie all contributed huge amounts to golf at UWCSEA during their time here and Charlotte’s story is one that is still talked about by our current golfers.”
After graduating from UWCSEA in 2011, Charlotte took a gap year to gain more competitive golf experience, playing in Australia and China, where she claimed a victory at the inaugural Annika Invitational in Shenzhen.
Charlotte then headed to the University of Washington, to which she had received a golf scholarship. There she majored in Mass Communications, specialising in Cultural Communications, with a minor in Women, Gender and Sexuality Studies. In her final year, Charlotte led the university to victory in the NCAA Championship, helping Washington defeat Stanford in the final, in the process claiming their first national title. Her college season included seven Top 10 finishes. Graduating in June 2016, Charlotte is now pursuing golf as a full-time career.
Between March and October 2017, Charlotte played 24 events, driving 10,000 miles between them. She says, “I love it. I like to travel, to meet new people and to see parts of America I’ve not seen before.” And of course, to golf. She has qualified this year to continue to play on the Symetra Tour for another year and is greatly looking forward to it.
We wish Charlotte all the best in the coming year and look forward to seeing her compete on the LPGA Tour in a few years’ time.
